I never knew about whaling or whaling ships but I got my education here. The Charles Morgan whaling ship is pretty cool and an eye opener in the tight beds the crew slept in on months on end. The staff were very very nice and informative about whaling and thay time era. Such a neat place. It's huge too so I'm glad they validated our ticket for two days because my boyfriend and I spent one day from 10am to 4pm exploring the place and came back the next day for another hour and a half and we still feel like we didn't see everything. I recommend to anyone eager to learn. I loved this place.
Mystic Seaport is not only the aquarium but, the town around it is based on the aquarium too! The aquarium has a great mission with some of the animals (sea lions) which is rehabilitating them so they are able to go back into the wild. It is indoor and outdoor which is fun but, the best part are the belugas! They are breathtaking and amazing! Outside is great for taking pictures too! Overall, Mystic Seaport is very fun but, aimed more towards kids who are 7-12 but, is very enjoyable for all ages!
Well worth a visit. There is so much to see and do in a day- many demonstrations and activities. There is a Mystic River mini cruise offered for a nominal fee of $4 per person which explains the history of many of the crafts at the seaport. The Mayflower (out of Plymouth, MA) is currently being restored here until 2019. This is a great opportunity to see the restoration and construction in action. FYI: free admission on your birthday with proof.
Loved it! Only the Americans do this historic re-creation really well and this is right up there with Williamsburg as one of their best. Good for all the family. Watch genuine craftsmen restoring wooden ships; a whaling crew row their boat; take a steam boat tour of the waterside and marvel at the dozens of old buildings carefully removed from various bits of the East Coast and reassembled here looking absolutely authentic. Great chowder and little cost.
Me and my wife visited awhile ago, it was a really good time. If you're any sort of history buff you'll enjoy this living museum. I would advise against bringing a dog, while they are accepted on the grounds, they aren't accepted into any of the exhibits.
